Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many riders does the bus seat?
A: The bus seats a maximum of 18 people including a maximum of 3 wheelchairs.


Q: Can the bus be flagged between scheduled stops?
A: Yes, you may flag the bus at any point along the fixed route. However, the bus cannot deviate from its scheduled route.


Q: What if I'm not sure which bus to get on?
A: Always ask the driver. Drivers will help you reach your destination. You  may also call 607-535-3555 to speak to an operator and ask which bus you need.


Q: Where can month passes and tickets be purchased?
A: Regular priced tickets and passes may be purchased on the Schuyler County Transit website with a credit card. Senior citizens may purchase half fare month passes and tickets in person at The Arc of Schuyler or from drivers with a Half Fare Identification Card or other proof of age. Half fare month passes and tickets for those with disabilities may be purchased from driver with a Half Fare Identification Card, in person at The Arc of Schuyler, or by mail with appropriate proof of disability.


Q: What is considered proof of eligibility?
A: Proof of age is a valid driver's license or other photo identification verifying age.Proof of disability may be a Medicaid Card, SSI, SSD, or Disabled Veterans' Benefits Letter.


Q: Can senior month passes be purchased as gifts by individuals who are not seniors?
A: Yes, provided that the buyer has verification of the senior's eligibility.


Q: Can service animals be on the bus?
A: Yes.


Q: Do Schuyler County Transit vehicles connect to Chemung, Steuben, or T-Cat Transit systems?
A: Not at this time. If you are interested in connecting at a particular stop at a certain time. Please contact the Mobility Manager at 607-535-3555, so that your request may be recorded and considered if/when future expansion of the system is possible.


Q: What if I need help carrying groceries to and from the bus?
A: The driver cannot assist with carrying purchases, and Schuyler County Transit does not provide aides. You  may qualify to have a  personal  aide ride for free. Contact the Mobility Manager at 607-535-3555 for an application. Riders who are grocery shopping may want to travel in pairs. Friends may help each other carry bags.


Q: What if I can't get to the bus stop or I'm not able to ride the regular bus because I have physical limitations?
A: You may be eligible for our Dial-A-Ride transportation service. Applications may be emailed to you or obtained at The Arc of Schuyler, Office for the Aging, or at many senior housing offices. You can also print the PDF of this application: here. If approved, you may make a reservation for a curb-to-curb shared ride service. Q: How long does it take to receive the Half Fare Identification card after turning in the application?
A: If you apply in person and have appropriate documentation proving eligibility for a Half Fare Identidication Card, a card can be issued immediately. If you mail your request and documentation, a card is generally issued within 7 business days.
